The argument that now the US will be better liked and more respected by the rest of the world is just so crazy. I'm not as well travelled as many people, but in my "ute" back in the 80s I did travel quite a bit. And here's what I learned: No one liked the US all that much. And judging by what I heard from others, since sometime after WWII or perhaps right around the Cold War no one ever liked us.
The french didnt like us
The Germans only tolerated us
The English? They sorta did, but loved to hate us, too
The Arab Street? Hated us, still does
Canadians? What do you think?
Latin Americans? Love us/hate us
Scandanavians? Probably hate
So now Obama's going to embark upon a Love Us road show. Go ahead. It won't work. People envy us, ergo, they hate us. Maybe it'll change now that we've been knocked down a peg by our housingbankingeconomiccrisiswithbailoutsstimuluspackagesgalore issues, but on the whole, we'll continue to be hated. OK, maybe Obama can move that up to a "Serious Dislike."
So winning the rest of world's love and affection is really a waste of time, kind of like the last 28 years, right Judith?
